Congratulations to Mrs. Pettit. Her boy was picked 156th overall by the Vancouver Canucks.
Congratulations to Spencer, a former student, who was picked 209th overall by the LA Kings.
Thanks for the cards, notes, letters, and gifts. Please enjoy a safe, happy, and somewhat adventurous summer. Be well and see you in the hallway in September.
I did get the end of the year mural put together, finally.

Why do I find things like this after the fractions unit?
Weekly tasks are due on Tuesday. The Talent Show is on Friday morning, and I'm not involved. We will be having a two-digit by two-digit multiplication test in the coming week (Happened on Wednesday), and our data management material test is this coming Thursday (Nope - Monday). We'll have our class badminton tournament this week for All the Jellybeans because I need all my marbles.
June 3, 2014
A huge thank you to all who helped make or day at the zoo a safe and an enjoyable experience. They were all well behaved, and the kids were fabulous as well.
May 30,2014
DRA is done and dusted. To celebrate, we did not have a reading comprehension passage this week. Nine 3 on 3 players competed on Friday. This gave us some quality time to get caught up on missing assignments and tasks.
Please make all possible sacrifices to the weather gods for next Tuesday's adventure. According to the high-tech weather gear, we might be in for a few rain drops.
May 24, 2014
The Charles Rennie Mackintosh building is recognised as being one of the greatest examples of art nouveau in the world. Sadly, fire swept through the library and west wing. I had the pleasure of visiting this wonderful marvel twice whilst in Scotland in 2007 and 2013. The library was incredible. I am sure the people of Glasgow will restore this magnificent building.
May 17, 2014
Thanks for all the interest in traveling to the zoo to see all of my relatives. The gorillas love it when I come to visit. Currently, everyone is going and we have sixteen parents our thirty students need to supervise. Fantastic.
It's the long weekend. We will have a test on fractions soon (next Friday-ish). Sometimes I wonder about the quotes we see. Did Atwood do a lot of laundry? Did she have shares is laundry suds? Enjoy the weekend however you spend it.
May 9, 2014
It was fantastic to see the weather stayed nice for Jump Rope for Heart. Too bad it poured down on me on my ride home from school. I guess I should not have commented about the weather person's inability to correctly predict the weather even with all that high-tech gear. Bad me. Soaked me.
As usual, our Weekly Tasks are due on Monday. We are working on fractions in math. The Day the Crayons Quit activity turned out quite well.
The field trip forms are due next Friday, May 16th. Cheques are made out to the school. Thanks to all who have generously volunteered to spend the day with us.
May 4, 2014
Big week ahead with several interruptions, including the electrical safety presentation on Tuesday morning and Jump Rope for Heart on Friday afternoon.
April 25, 2014
We started our review on Friday afternoon. Track and Field day is now, as of 04/24/2014, on Monday. The math test is still on Wednesday. Our Earth Day mural turned out well. Picture to follow. The Readers' Theatre productions turned out well, and from what I have noticed, the class did a brilliant job on their French board games.
April 24, 2014
No Weekly Word test this week, and no Weekly Tasks either. Friday's math test was going to be moved to next Tuesday, but that is Track and Field day, so we will have the test on Wednesday, I hope.
13 of the class will be doing their Dance Club presentation at tomorrow morning's Colour House Assembly.
Happy Easter
Please enjoy the weekend. Tuesday, Earth Day, I have my spine shots, so I will see you all on Wednesday.
I know, terrible humour.
Back at it tomorrow
Well, as usual, that was a really quick week. Remember one thing for tomorrow...GREEN, and maybe your reading comprehension and problem solving task sheet. Green, if you have it, would be rather festive.
March Break
The double digit times a double digit multiplication is not a home task. Since it is a new learning task, we are working on it together in the classroom. Reading comprehension and the problem solving sheet (#2) will be collected on March 17, the Monday you return. Our human organ systems project is an at-school project.
March 8, the night someone steals that hour of sleep from all of us. That is just plain mean.
March 5, 2014
How is it March already? The math tests were returned on Tuesday, and two came back with signatures. We attended the grade 7 and 8 speeches today. Very interesting topics.
Tomorrow morning we are using a movie to work on our story summary skills (Somebody Wanted But So). In the afternoon, we have a Colour House assembly.
I hope you all have a fantastic break.
We will continue to work on double digit factor times a double digit factor after the break.
Oh, I can't believe I forgot Fat Tuesday. March 4. Just too busy this week to think. Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras.
Sunday, February 23, 2014
Wednesday, February 19, 2014
We'll have a math test next Tuesday (if all goes as planned) on transformations (translation, reflection, and rotation). We have the same weekly words from last week since we didn't get to the spelling test last week due to Olympic Day, and we don't have any Weekly Tasks this week so a few of classmates can get caught up with their tasks. We have finished our eighty page study/practice of cursive writing, so don't expect to see cursive writing pages anymore.
This Friday afternoon...
It's that time of year. Yes we will have a thingy in the afternoon. Bring a snack and a beverage for yourself to enjoy. Games afternoon or movie? We'll discuss the possibilities as a group on Wednesday. This hasn't not been the most academic of weeks with skiing and Olympic Day, but we are getting some fantastic winter outdoor exercise.
February 10, 2014
Tomorrow is the ski trip for 18 characters of our cast of merry minions. You are leaving from the school at 9:10. Dress for your day outside. Pick up time is 5 PM at the school, not the slope.

If you want to practise some science, put some really hot water from your tap into a coffee cup, then open your door and toss the hot water into the air. You don't need to boil the water, hot tap water works.
With the medal matches of the World Juniors about to air, I know that our break is about to end. I hope your time away from 214 has been relaxing and enjoyable. You didn't have any tasks to complete over the break, so just be rested and relaxed for Monday.
If you are really bored...
I hope you and your family have a joyful and relaxing holiday. Thank you for all of your exceptionally thoughtful gifts. Secret Santa was very fun. You did a fantastic job on your Grinch plays. Your patterning and algebra tests were excellent, and your artwork brightened the hallway for the school's Christmas concert. Now, get off the Internet and get outside and enjoy the break. Be well.
We will see what our Not-So Secret Santa left under our tree on Wednesday, December 18th. You can sneek it into the classroom before Wednesday afternoon. Remember, no peeking under the tree.
December 16, 2013
No gym time tomorrow because the gym will be used to prepare for tomorrow night's performance.
We will present the Grinch reader's theatre on Wednesday. No you don't need to memorize your lines, but remember our focus, appropriate expression.
December 12, 2013
Fortunately I finally got the doctor's appointment that I have been patiently (sorry) waiting for. It's been an eight month wait so I'm not in the position to change it. Unfortunately, the appointment is on the 19th. We were going to have a bit of a small celebration/movie in the afternoon and the kids wanted Mrs. T to come in to take my place. We might try out a plot summary task as well using our movie.
So, to make a long story a bit longer, everyone can bring in a snack and beverage for the afternoon next Thursday. We do have someone with a peanut and nut allergy in the room. I believe it is also PJ day as well.
December 10, 2013
We drew our popsicle sticks this afternoon. We all understand the Secret Santa police will not hunt us down if we spend $5.37, or find that incredible sale, but we want to stay around the $5 mark. Thanks for signing the sticks and thanks for bringing in the Santa hat Caitlin.
We are working on a mural project to decorate the front of the school for next week's concert. It's looking pretty good so far.
This week will be the last week for reading comprehension, weekly math practice, and cursive writing until January.
November 25, 2013
Yesterday I finally got the data management tests entered into Excel. They, along with a bin full of other tasks, were returned at the end of the day.
To celebrate our awesomeness by completing D.R.A., we were going to enjoy some "free" time. But, in an act of complete silliness, I offered a choice: no Weekly Tasks this week (no reading comprehension, math practice, cursive, and Daily Language) or a movie on Friday afternoon. They voted for the former, not the latter, so you won't be seeing any division problem frowns this weekend.
We began working on our Famous Canadian project this morning.
We'll have an algebra test next week on Thursday.
Where is the pineapple?
What does an author do in his "spare" time? He makes a music video with U2.
Our Group Mural for Monday
It's hanging in the front hallway of the school classroom.
November 3 (Sunday) Reminders
Last week was rather scattered, which was expected given Hallowe'en, rain, a broken pin in the Beamer's VGA cable, a fire drill, a haunted house, some dancing in the Cha Cha Palace, and on and on. I hope you enjoyed our short story this week. Thanks for all the Mars bars. We had a great start to reflecting our names within a square using isosceles triagles as a mirror line.
Remember tomorrow's graphing test - drawing a broken-line graph and a picograph
You will draw a bar graph with intervals, but will need to calculate range and, I think, the interval.
range = maximum (largest) number - minimum (smallest) number
Interval = range divided by the number of bars you are drawing
Remember to have your Weekly Tasks, reading comprehension, cursive writing, and multiplication practice, with you on Monday.
Monday is a book exchange day, and Tuesday we will be off to the computer lab to work on health.
Tomorrow (Oct. 30)
I am off for my once-every-three-months shots in spine, so Mrs. W will be in for a calligraphy workshop. If time permits, we will also construct nets into three-dimensional solids (A.K.A. assemble our little monsters). Have page 69 #5 in math ready to go for Thursday.
Week ending October 25, 2013
Our week ended with a Colour House Assembly and a broken VGA cable so Friday's plans to watch a movie for social studies were a bust. We passed out a ton of completed tasks, including so terrific artwork (shoes). We did some work on Frankenstein meets Picasso portraits that now adorn the wall outside of 214. It is always nice to see 214's work stop others in their tracks when they are walking down the hallway.
We are at the final copy stage of "The Moment" writing exercise, and we are currently on Week 7 of our Daily Language writing work.
We collated the experiments done for Monday. No one completed the newspaper experiment, so we did that one together in the classroom. The black construction paper was already fading after twenty-four hours of cloudy days.
For Monday, our usual tasks are due: cursive writing, multiplication practice, and reading comprehension.
We will have a math test soon, possibly Wednesday. EDIT: This might have been too enthusiastic judging by today's (October 28th) performance. Maybe next Monday might be better for all concerned.) For Hallowe'en, we can either wear our costume, wear black and/or orange, or happily come to school wearing our usually school threads.
October 20, 2013
Side note: I couldn't help but notice a former student has a new letter on his jersey.
We began working on a short writing piece called The Moment. We should be done, or almost done, the rough draft.
October 16, 2013
Remember tomorrow's test on our Weekly Words
Yes, only one of the five home experiments (page 26) needs to be completed by Monday.
You need ten Always... statements for tomorrow.
Happy Thanksgiving...enjoy.
The Week Ending October 10, 2013
We have reached the Thanksgiving Day weekend. We have our usual Weekly Tasks that are due on Monday (some multiplication work, cursive writing, and reading comprehension). We had a quick assessment on broken-line graphs. We began working on a writing piece focusing on a single, short three second moment. We created a sequence of what happened during those few seconds, then told our story to three of our classmates. We also worked on some Frankenstein/Picasso art.
Two members of the class, Deanna and Willem, are off to the Valley Championships for cross country. We also had an assembly to celebrate our 30th year of participating in the Terry Fox Run. The community has raised over $160 000 over the last thirty years. That is incredible.
We heard a bit more of our class book, Farticus Maximus.
We do have a spot of home work this weekend. For health, we need to select a drug to research at school.
Have a great Thanksgiving weekend.
October
Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

End of Our Final Full Week in September
We continued working on our Daily Language Activities, but instead of projecting it, we worked either solo or in a duet. We also started our daily timed reading (the 6 Minute Solution). It is paired timed reading of a passage based on our reading level and speed. It is meant to increase reading speed (fluency), not reading comprehension.
No surprise fire drills this week.
In art, we worked on value (light to dark shading). We used this idea to draw our shoes.
We got our place value test back on Friday. Please have a look at it, sign it so I know you have seen it, and return it on Monday.
We began working on a data management unit by creating a bar graph. We also graphed spelling errors from our Weekly Words test on Thursday. Can you guess which word was most troublesome?
We are still missing four Student Information Sheets, the sheets with parent and emergency contact numbers, as well as other important information.
For Monday, we have our "Weekly Tasks", including a reading comprehension exercise, a multiplication sheet, and a cursive writing task (p. 16 to 19). If you didn't get your tenNever... ideas done, please have it ready for Monday.

End of Our Third Week
We continued working on our Daily Language Activities. We had a couple of surprise fire drills. Our place value test on Friday afternoon went well. For Monday, we have our "Weekly Tasks", including a reading comprehension exercise, a multiplication sheet, and a cursive writing task (p. 12 to 15). If you didn't get your paragraph about Dot completed in class, make sure it's ready for Monday.
In science, we watched a video on changes in states of matter, then worked on a task about the same topic (Matter p. 6 and 7).
Enjoy the weekend. Please don't ask about the piazza song from French class.
September 16, 2013
We should be having a plaue place value test by the end of the week. We had a quiz today. It was returned.

Week Two
“What day is it?”
“It’s today,” squeaked Piglet.
“My favourite day,” said Pooh.
Pooh was such a wise little bear. We continued working on reading testing. I'm about a third of the way through the class of twenty-nine. We had a few small writing activities during the week. In mathematics, we continued working on place value. No one dozed off during a science video on matter, unfortunately the title song still rings through my head...Real World Science... Instead of a surprise quiz in math, I was surprised by our QSP assembly (magazine fund raiser) on Friday.
On Monday, our first cursive writing sheets are due, as well as the single digit by single digit and double digit by single digit multiplication are due.
Thanks to all for coming to Meet the Creature night on Thursday. The kids did a great job creating their creatures, and I enjoyed playing host. It is always good to put a face to a name, and I am sure a self-deprecating joke would fit in here nicely. Our Fatboy beanbag chair arrived to provide a cozy place to read.
Week One Wrap-Up
The beginning is over. Maybe, just maybe, normalcy might return soon. We had a few diagnostic tests this week to determine where we are at in a few areas. We worked on some alien/monster/creature art made from our cursive-written names. We should all have a book to read. We have also started our first unit in math, an adventure into place value. We had one homework assignment so far - find one interesting fact to share with the rest of the group.
No, we are not using planners. The school newsletter was sent home with every student in the class on Friday. A school year calendar was sent home on Thursday with every student.
2013 - 2014 School Year
If you are going to be in 214 this year with me, then please do not run out and buy any school materials. I have paper, pencils, pencil crayons, and rulers. I have everything except facial tissue. Sorry, but I don't have a list of "necessary items" to buy.
Summer 2013
Best of luck to Logan at the Olympic Selection Camp in Calgary.
It's always great to see former students making their dreams come true. Bravo Spencer, bravo!
